Can anyone confirm the rumor that Apple has removed the OPTION key from all new Mac Pro machines?
I guess Options are a sensitive subject in Cupertino these days.
Yes, Steve did look rather gaunt at yesterday's keynote. But bear two things in mind:
1. He is a recovering pancreatic cancer victim.
2. He is either a vegan or vegetarian.
Steve did seem to rely upon his exec staff more than in the past, but it did give us the opportunity to size them up a bit. A few observations...
1. Phil Schiller looks as though he could hold his own in a Sumo wrestling bout with Steve Ballmer.
2. Bertrand sounded as though he was auditioning for the Inspector Clouseau part in The Pink Panther.
3. Scott Forrestall appeared to be aping Steve Jobs' gestures, mannerisms and speech patterns. Is he the anointed one? Is he being groomed as Jobs' successor? If it happens, you read it here first.
Like most of Wall Street and the world, I hope that neither illness nor executive shuffling prevent Steve from helming Apple for many decades to come.

I'd confirm it, I've been suffering almost half the battery life since updating. I worried it was the battery but my device is only 6 months old, I hope 4.3.1 does address the issue and that it's not really my battery.

Currently the Mac App Store has no way of offering an upgrade to existing Mac software. I don't see that changing.
I suspect that all these apps will be stripped of their sample media. They're all quite small without them. Perhaps Apple will sell those files separately on their own on DVDs?
Yeah, we'll see. I guess it all depends on what Apple decides, eh? Unless they've condensed 7-9 apps into 1-4 and ditched all the sample media for livetype, soundtrack pro, motion, DVD studio pro, etc then I strongly doubt it'll be an app store exclusive. I can tell you though, our IT staff won't be very fond of having to go through the Mac app store to keep our entire AV dept up and running.
Aperture is still sold in a box at a higher price, and I'm sure all pro apps will be as well for the foreseeable future. FCP and Aperture as stand alone apps are relatively small, and aperture doesn't ship with 7 discs.

Let's theorize: So why didn't they use the internal card?
Supposedly because apple said "please, please, pretty please dont"
Edit: Or maybe it was just an offer they couldnt refuse...

^^^ Awesome for 6400 ISO! Looking forward to more shots from Sat. if you have them. :)
Thanks so much! Yea, I'm very impressed by the high ISO, although I think the snow might be helping it blend a bit.
I wish I spent more time consciously framing shots, and waiting for the right moment to snap pictures. This photo I think would have been much better if I waited for those two boys to leave the frame, and if I didn't cut her legs off.

The new ones are ever so slightly thinner and have rounded edges like a mini. I put mine up against my partners 1st gen (in it's rather scratched case) so you could see.
I changed my mind on the packaging pic too. When the iPod's in there it's like a little glass coffin :)

I love it. Personally, I prefer the previous nano box, but if this is helping the environment then I'm happy!

Pirates are douchebags.
Don't worry about it. The guys who can't afford to pay for it and pirate it are usually the folks who just want to "hoard" it rather than use it. If they had any talent to begin with, they'd be making enough money with the tool where the cost of it would be meaningless anyway. ;)

Does your screw stick out a little bit or is it leveled with the plastic?
It's level in the plastic, and dead center, so it's really hardly noticeable. Not sure why they had to do that though, you'd think they could fasten it the same way they do the old heatsink. Of course, I don't know much about heatsink placement and MB mobo's, so I should just keep my mouth shut I guess.

My 27" iMac has arrived! It replaces a 15" MacBook Pro. I am loving it so far. It's only been about 2.5 hours so far still getting everything moved back over and setting things up to my liking (hence the external hd in the back left).
I am thinking about just giving this wireless keyboard over to the iPad, since I have the wired version with numeric keypad sitting outside of the shot. I also want to get a Magic Trackpad, as this Magic Mouse is the devil.
Oh yes, and I am using a small cutting board as a mousepad! It works well. The 17" SyncMaster to the right is a holdover from my old Power Mac G4 I had for years (still works but has been put to rest). It's fine for what I need it for, mainly extra auxiliary space for iTunes, Bridge, etc. Creature Speakers still going strong after all these years too.
Desk is a bit devoid of personality at the moment because I wanted a clean slate for when this beast arrived. Will add things back in the next week or so.

So... do these c2d mbs run cooler? The old cd mbs ran hot under Parallels.
But does the 1GB use one memory slot or two?Knowing Apple, most likely both slots are taken up. It's typical Apple.

The thing is, it still is suboptimal on the current generation. I believe Apple just added it as just another feature while music is the main priority of the player.
And vitaboy, I couldn't agree more, well written, excellent post.
First of all, thanks to milo for finding a transcript of that forum where Steve Jobs related his thoughts about a video iPod. My own recollection, it appears, was a bit cloudy. :p
That being said, what QuarterSwede said. Jobs never said, "Never" to the video iPod. He talked instead about limitations, how video on a portable device would never replicate watching video on a 50 inch screen. Video on an iPod would be "suboptimal" but again, he never said it would be something Apple would never do.
Instead, he was really trying to lower people's expectations about video on the iPod. We know now that Apple already had a video iPod in the labs, with the same 4:3 screen ratio and 320x240 resolution. People back then (as today) were talking about widescreen iPods that somehow would be like portable DVD players, with monstrous screens and such. So it seems that Steve knew that a video iPod would still be a while off in terms of a commercial launch, but needed to lower people's expectations. His talk was simply about the pros-and-cons of doing video on an iPod, not a statement that a video ipod was totally out of the possibility.
Notice again his comments about wireless. Steve again couches his comments with talk of pros-and-cons. He is realistic about what wireless will do, but it's also clear he isn't ready to release a wireless iPod just for the sake of wireless. Problems like battery life have to be solved first, i.e. all the pieces have to first fall in place before Apple launches the product.
It just reiterates the point I made before - when a wireless iPod sees the light of day, my guess is that there will be a flood of articles with the phrase "wireless done right."

We'll see what happens here eh? If new ones come out than there will be a batch of the old Macbooks on eBay.. no complaints for that

Only because people are dumb and think that they always need to be using the best computer. Hate to break it, but the MacBook isn't the best.

9 to 5 Mac reports (http://www.9to5mac.com/new-macbook-pros-5464563) that it has received word from a tipster claiming that Apple is set to be released as soon as tomorrow, although the launch may be delayed until next Tuesday. The report follows an earlier claim (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/10/new-hexacore-mac-pros-next-tuesday/) of new Mac Pro models set for launch next Tuesday. According to the source:The MacBook Pro will be released on the same day as Mac Pro. We are scheduled for a Friday morning release but with the amount of updates may be pushed to Tuesday. ipad is number 1 and everything else is as time permits. Look for i5 in base macbook pro with i7 in higher end 15 and 17 inch.9 to 5 Mac offers no assessment of the reliability of the source, and rumor sites frequently receive incorrect information from sources claiming to be in the know. Consequently, we currently view this report with considerable skepticism pending additional information.
The MacBook Pros were last (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/08/apple-updates-13-aluminum-macbook-rebranded-as-macbook-pro/) updated (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/08/apple-releases-new-15-macbook-pro-updates-17-macbook-pro/) in June and are due for a refresh (http://www.macrumors.com/members/buyersguide/#MacBook_Pro). Evidence of a Core i7-based MacBook Pro surfaced (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/02/06/unreleased-core-i7-macbook-pro-61-benchmarked-supplies-constrained/) in Geekbench's results just over a month ago, and a number of other reports (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/02/17/the-wait-for-new-macbook-pros-continues-more-best-buy-skus-found/) of new machines appeared in subsequent weeks. The rumor mill has been relatively quiet for the past couple of weeks, however, despite considerable interest in and expectation of updated models.
Update: 9 to 5 Mac now reports that the cited source may have been a hoax, although it notes that it has received multiple tips of a MacBook Pro release in the very near future.

I'm really excited for the new features, many of which sound great, but I wonder why they couldn't just implement them into the current FCP interface? I'm a heavy Final Cut Pro user and really fast with the current application. I hate to have to learn an entirely new interface.
I would be shocked if the keystrokes were different, so you'll have that going for you.

I love how everybody is like "I've got the CDs who cares" or "Buy the CDs they are cheaper". The Beatles on iTunes isn't for you. It is for people who don't buy CDs, it's for the future when the majority of people get digital music and it's certainly for a whole generation of kids who won't know what a CD is or care, in the same way that vinyl is now seen as archaic.
I'm sure I am repeating someone else's thoughts, but it doesn't seem clear to a lot of people.
It's too bad that these kids will never know how much better sounding a CD can be over 256kbs. I put applelossless on my iPod and when I let someone listen they usually say wow! it sounds so good.

So users on the subscription model get updated to the next version as part of their subscription? So if I purchase a subscription for a year of 5.5. and CS6 comes out in june, then for no extra cost I'm able to upgrade to CS6?
Unless I've missed something, which is entirely possible, the subscription model seems to be based around temporary folks or how often the packs will be upgraded.
I mean I have 3 macs with design premium CS4. Upgrading the 5.5 would cost $1,947 out right. But if I subscribe for $95/month * 3 macs, then that's $3,420 after one year.
However if I go the non-subscription route, and CS6 comes out in less than a year from the time I would have subscribed, it's the same $649/upgrade cost, and I purchase it....then subscribing would have been cheaper by about $470. But that seems like a lot of assumptions.

Ah well, Apple'll probably make back up the cost of that iPad through the apps that guy will buy in the app store on his iPad and on his Mac.
