Android Phone Specs are out pacing the Iphone. An 8 Megapixel camera, bigger screen and more memory will keep me buying. IOS 5 with the rumored adobe flash would be great too.

    Adobe flash... HA!

The wizards at Apple can't even make a mobile device that will run that load of crap. I hope that crap-ware never makes it into any IOS based products.

woah that's a lot of screen space! Mind if I ask what your running the screens from and screen sizes?

haha...yeah, it is quite a bit of space. Left (21" HP f2105) and top middle (30" HP LP3065) are connected to a desktop PC that I use for work. I work from home and mess with a lot of spreadsheets and querying data so it's helpful having all the space to move stuff around. The vertical screen (24" HP2408h) is connected to my MBP via mini port to HDMI that I use mostly for personal use. The sad thing is I have a 3 or 4 more 21" screens in the closet. If I had the desk space I would hook them all up... :D

I think I remember Jobs saying that no one wants to read a book with clunky low rez text, an e-book would have to have a sharp high resolution text.

You would have to make a screen that was 300 dpi, people with bad eye sight could enlarge the text.

Measure a paperback book without the margins, it comes to 6.4" X 3.6" at 300dpi that comes to 1920 by 1080 pixels, and that happens to be a HD Video ratio.

Ballmer said his company's upcoming Zune player fits into the hardware model because the value, if its successful, is all in the software. "It's in community [the ability to share music and pictures with other Zune users]," he said. "I want to squirt you a picture of my kids. You want to squirt me back a video of your vacation. That's a software experience."

"....Oh, she's hot. I wonder if she squirts?" :D

OK, mods can delete that one.

Haven't heard much from Obama about JOBS, JOBS, JOBS lately ...

Perhaps if you started paying attention... only nine or so days ago:

During a speech to U.S. and Brazilian business leaders, Obama said he sees opportunities for the U.S. to sell more goods and services to Brazil's rapidly growing market of about 200 million consumers. He says the $50 billion in goods and services the U.S. sells to Brazil support more than 250,000 jobs back home.

    http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9M2FVU00.htm

and wrote a piece in USAToday just a few days beforehand:

But in this increasingly interconnected and fiercely competitive world, our top priority has to be creating and sustaining new jobs and new opportunities for our people.

Lately, we've seen signs that we're moving in the right direction. Our economy added nearly a quarter of a million new private sector jobs last month, and the unemployment rate is at its lowest level in nearly two years. And to keep that progress going, we've got to keep competing for every new job, every new industry, and every new market in the 21st century.

That's one of the reasons I will travel to Latin America this week to strengthen our economic relationship with neighbors who are playing a growing role in our economic future.

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/forum/2011-03-18-column18_ST3_N.htm

    Do try to keep up.

    :::

As for Rand Paul's objections, it's so geopolitically and historically ignorant, it's beyond contempt. It's been hilarious watching the right run around to find a consistent line of attack on this. Congress hasn't declared war since the 1940s.

This is a multilateral action with the backing of a Security Council resolution. The Daily Telegraph's rantings about Al Qaeda are little more than Gaddafi propaganda.

Hizbullah is a Shiite movement of southern Lebanon. There are no Shiites in North Africa, where almost all Muslims are Sunni. Hamas is a Palestinian movement and does not have a branch franchise in Libya. The people of Benghazi and Misrata, together amounting to 1.3 million, the backbone of the liberation movement, are not al-Qaeda, which is not a mass movement. In fact, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is like a few hundred guys and is an Algerian organization. I know, I know, pointing out that Michelle Bachmann has said something uninformed is like pointing out that Lady Gaga has done something outrageous. But we are told that Bachmann made a positive impression among possible Republican voters in Iowa recently, and the world in which we live has such persons as potential presidential candidates.

Sarah Palin wants the US military to go into Libya, kill Muammar Qaddafi and then get back out. Palin doesnt seem to realize that 110,000 US troops on the ground took 8 months just to find Saddam Hussein after they had invaded and occupied Iraq, and that at that point were were bound by Pottery Barn rules per Colin Powell we had broken the vase and had now owned it. That vase cost about a trillion dollars all told, as Obama pointed out tonight, along with thousands of US and Iraqi lives. Palin lives in a magical world where she can wave her wand and Sarah suddenly gets her way.

Newt Gingrich was for the intervention before he was against it.

And Mitt Romney is all for invading Libya, but thinks the United States should have done it all by itself without consulting allies and apparently should bear all the costs of doing so. Romney alleged that the US followed France into Libya, though in fact the US fired 110 Tomahawk missiles at Qaddafis anti-aircraft batteries as the engagement was beginning, making it safe for the French pilots to fly missions there.

    http://www.juancole.com/2011/03/obama-on-libya-vs-trump-bachmann-romney-gingrich-and-carrot-top.html

As for US interests, many of you including the racist fringe christianist Pauls, are not connecting the dots:

For those who ask what the U.S. national interest in Libya is, the correct question is about broad U.S. regional interests. Had the Libyan crisis emerged before the Arab uprisings, intervention would still have been the moral course though it would have been harder to make the case about U.S. interests. But there is a link among the revolutions sweeping the Arab world that cannot be denied.

First, the uprisings have been, stunningly, peaceful. Even in Yemen where weapons are everywhere, hundreds of thousands have remained adamant in facing the bullets of security forces by repeating Cairos Tahrir Square chant, Silmiyyah, Silmiyyah (peaceful, peaceful). For thousands, a whiff of dignity and freedom has overcome the fear of death.

Their success will be the antidote to militant extremists and thus in the U.S. interest and their failure would surely turn their energies toward militancy. To be sure, as the Middle East goes through unstable times, al Qaeda will find new opportunities and Washington must remain vigilant. But al Qaedas ultimate undoing will be when the vast majority of Arabs and Muslims see it as the primary threat to their aspirations.

    http://www.brookings.edu/opinions/2011/0328_libya_telhami.aspx

The entire point of this is in the long-term. Apart from denying a victorious Gaddafi an opportunity to create trouble to his neighbours and destabilise the region, it is to provide support for popular uprisings in order to deny radicalism the oxygen it needs.

Right. When you eat off of your gear you're always going to find ways to not spend SO MUCH on said gear so you can put more food in your mouth. Which is why I really don't have an issue claiming student-ship if I am able to. I personally don't do it with certain software titles, but I will do it with Apple hardware and others. AVID Media Composer is $2500 regular price give or take a few $100s. The EDU version is $295 . . . . . okay I am going to hop on that EDU bandwagon right now.

I agree, and am fortunate to have a legit edu connection. That said, companies vary on their proof requirements. Apple, in my experience, will give you the edu price by just saying you are a student/teacher/buying it for one. I've seen them sell a Mac at that price to grandparents, etc. Pretty decent policy. MS just requires a .edu email, but then again technet is so cheap that the edu discount pales. of course, with technet using the software in a production environment is a license violation.

Just as the lenses you acquire in still/video photography will cost more than your body, software will be the major cost in building any rig.

Oh ya. I have several pieces of glass that individually cost more than the body. People complain about software lock in; MS / APPLE ?Adobe et. al. have nothing on the camera manufacturers and their proprietary mounts.

Read the comment thoroughly. ANYONE can learn the apps, any goofball like you stated yourself in the bold. I didn't put any time restraint on this goofball. But I did mention that it take far more to be a good designer.

Even 100 million would be a steal. Remember that way back in 1995 Bill Gates and Microsoft paid the Stones 20 Million to use Start Me Up. The Who (Pete Townsend) has gotten rich all over again just from the CSI Franchise. Hey they wrote the songs so they should make the money IF they want to.

Yea. They wanted a big PRODUCT LAUNCH.. they were selling an operating system that cost, what.. $200+ a copy if you bought it retail? They weren't announcing the addition of Solitaire to an existing product that already had something like 70% market share.

Anybody who wants Beatles tunes probably already has them. Sure, the addition of Beatles tunes is a good thing for iTunes, and the sale of those tunes will add to Apples bottom line.. simply expanding their catalog peaks customers interest.. but not enough to justify spending a million plus bucks just to license a song for a 30 second spot.

If you were to poll 1,000 random people on the street, you'd be lucky if the majority of people would even know what the hell 'Apple Corps' was, let alone that they had a legal dispute over Apple Computers name.. so the 'joke' of selecting a song like 'Come Together' would be absolutely lost on most people.

Congratulations to Apple if they can add the Beatles to their iTunes catalog.. but save the advertising budget for the next gen iPod or OS 10.5.

Almost all developers live in a world where they code to specs and standards. Their code is then reviewed by other developers, tested repeatedly and then approved for implementation.

Apple's model isn't different from what most companies do internally.

Yeah, the point just flew right above your head. Just like 99% of the posters on this thread. This is not about others "reviewing" our apps. It is about the process itself. Do you know that Trillian (yep, the messenger) has been in review for 2 months now without a word from Apple?

Spending time, money, and effort working on an App, submitting it then sitting not knowing what is going to happen or when you are going to hear back from them is ridiculous. Assuming after waiting 3 weeks, they found a bug in your app. You know what happens? Even if you can fix the bug in 1 min? You are sent to the back of the queue for another 3 weeks. That is almost 2 months to get your app to the store. I know some dude who had his app approved after 4 months. A complete joke!

This developer that you are joking about worked on Firefox (yeah, that's right!) and firebug (one of the best FF extensions EVER).

    You guys are funny.

I went to a best buy around Boston and asked for an MBP, kinda hoping they'd tell me it's out of stock for now.
The sales person told me they just got in a truckload of the current MBPs on Friday, and they have in stock whatever I want.
He told me in his experience with best buy inventories, he thinks it will take about two more months until the next refresh.

I am assuming that Apple has not spent any effort on making Flash run smoothly on Os X, but honestly its been almost 4 years since Adobe bought Macromedia and they still can't be bothered to make it run right? Really? And how long did it take for Microsoft to make a better performing Flash replacement (silverlight) for a competing Os no less. Well jeeze no fracking wonder why Apple has had enough and refuses to budge on Flash for iPhone. If you were in Apples shoes would you trust Adobe to give you a well coded port of Flash that didn't turn the iphone into battery sucking, testicle roasting hot plate?

I installed an early beta of Windows 7 (about 5-6 months from the GM) and was stunned that even then flash ran better then in Leopard. This tells me that Adobe is spending all their time on optimization for windows, obviously their largest market. And that is understandable but their arrogance in not bothering to ever give mac users a better product is pissing me off. So I have and will continue to use it as little as possible until Adobe shows us mac users some respect.

Either scalpers have swooped in or there are a lot more geeks that just want to attend the conference.

I was seriously disappointed when I attended last years one, the Apple engineers couldn't answer either of my questions, the presentations only reaffirmed what I already knew or pointed to documentation / demo code that every developer got for free anyway.

If you are a serious developer and want to attend the conference to actually learn its a serious disappointment. But I guess most conferences are just to network and geek it up which is why it sold out I guess.

    What were your questions?

I was trying to add external display support to my iOS wireless collaborative drawing app (http://www.greengar.com/apps/whiteboard/), but I had run into a few problems. At WWDC I was able to work with 2 Apple engineers until we solved it. It was awesome; definitely worth it.

Bigger screen is not an improved spec.

If it's done within the same unit dimensions or slightly (a few millimeters) larger, then yes it is an improved spec.

In a 3.5" screen is somewhat of a drawback for high end devices that are expected to do everything. Power draw on screens and chips is reduced, the technology exists to keep thin form factors and battery life while scaling up to 3.7 and 4" screens. Just swapping between a Nexus One's 3.7" and Nexus S' 4.0" makes a noticeable difference. Scaling 960x640 up to 4" isn't going to ruin the "zomg retina" that every apple fanatic screams about. It'll still put it ahead of all the competition's 800x480 4" screens.

When the interface on a device is handled solely through touch input on the screen itself, 4" screens have a significant advantage over 3.5" screens. After using a Nexus S, Galaxy S, HTC HD2, etc. I think the sweet spot is 4". 4.3" and the unit dimensions start getting too big. But 4" provides just enough extra screen real estate to make typing more comfortable and information display easier to read. Not to mention with Apple pushing gaming on its IOS devices, onscreen joysticks would be made quite a bit easier with a little added space.

And the point is that the current Iphone dimensions don't need to change to accommodate a larger screen. Just lessen the bezel width and you can put a larger screen in the current sized handset without issue. Or scale the dimensions up a few millimeters. Either way it's win-win.
